The #LeadingTheCharge 2019 Great EV Road Trip is an annual event, now in its 5th season. A group of electric cars set out around the country stopping at a town near you to hold events. These events are listed below.
Electric vehicles (EVs) aren’t the stuff of science fiction, they are very real and they are here to stay!
If you haven’t seen an electric vehicle for yourself, come along to a Leading The Charge event. At these events, you will be able to talk to some of the owners or read information about the current EV situation in New Zealand and what steps are being taken to increase uptake. At many of them, you'll be able to test drive, or ride in an electric car to feel the difference.

MONDAY 15th April 2019, 9 – 10 AM
Local fleet managers are invited to go along to the Orion offices in Wairakei Road to find out more about introducing electric vehicles into company fleets.
As well as the huge Orion fleet of cars on display, there will be a range of other EV options there, courtesy of the #LeadingTheCharge Great EV Road Trip. They will have been seen around Christchurch over the proceeding weekend at various public events and will be leaving for Blenheim at 10am directly after this event.
If there is interest, the public may linger after the road trip has left to finish discussing options with the knowledgeable staff at Orion.
The experienced drivers from the road trip will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about the realities of owning and driving electric cars and vans. You may be surprised at the range of options that are already available in NZ, and how low the operating costs of these fleets are in comparison to traditional fleets.
Refreshments will be provided.
TUESDAY 16th April, 2019, 10:30 AM until MIDDAY
Join the road trippers in Blenheim as they do one more South Island event before heading off on the ferry for the North Island. This is likely to be a mighty event, with an expected 17 road trip participants in 11 cars.
Some cars will be old favourites and others will be brand new directly off the boat.
Liz Davidson Place is situated right in the centre of town and is named after the town's first female mayor. It is part of a redevelopment and beautifying plan by the Council, who have kindly let us use it.
All are welcome to come and view the cars, meet the Trustees and EV Owners, and/or learn about EV ownership. Perhaps you'll even get a chance to drive or ride in an EV if you haven't before.
WEDNESDAY, April 17th 2019, 12 – 1 PM
Finally, the #LeadingTheCharge annual road trip will be stopping in Masterton, where special guests will be welcoming us. For one hour, you'll be able to look at their vehicles, take one for a drive and talk about EV ownership with experienced EV Owners.
This will be the 5th Annual Road Trip and will cover some 5,200km+ over 31 days. The Road Trippers will stop daily in different towns to hold events and raise awareness of electric vehicles.
THURSDAY 18TH April 2019, 12PM – 3PM
The 5th annual NZ EV Tour is coming to Palmerston North on Thursday 18th April.
EVs are very economical, clean, quiet, comfortable, very fast, and air-pollution and climate-change emission-free, making them hugely important for the health and welfare of both people and the planet.

EASTER MONDAY, 22nd April 2019, 12 – 2 PM
What's it really like to own and drive an EV?
The #LeadingTheCharge Great EV Road Trippers will be driving to Raglan on Easter Monday. Here's your chance to talk to the volunteers from the Better NZ Trust about EV Ownership. You may be able to take a car for a drive or simply get the electric experience as a passenger.
As they travel 5,300km right around the country, their aim is to get as many people into cars as they can, so that New Zealanders from every corner can experience them first hand. If you've not driven an electric vehicle before, you'll be surprised at how different they are.
Find the convoy out in front of the Raglan Club on Bow Street.
*Looking for the event in Hamilton? This event has now replaced that event.
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 24TH 2019, 10:30 AM - 2PMSponsored by Ecotricity, this event is shaping up to be a huge turnout of electric vehicles.
The Road Trip convoy will be stopping in Auckland as it heads on its final legs towards Cape Reinga. This epic journey of over 5,285 km is held annually by #LeadingTheCharge volunteers, whose goal is to promote electric vehicles (EVs) in towns across New Zealand.
Find out why we love electric cars. Get in behind the wheel to feel the power and excitement of instant torque, no vibration, zero tailpipe emissions, and low, low running costs.
We encourage you to take public transport to this event, as the Smales Farm busway is conveniently onsite. 1-hr parking is also available.
While visiting Smales Farm, take advantage of the many restaurants, cafes and bars at The Goodside and Q4.
The EV convoy will be outside the Q4 Pavilion between 10:30 and 2pm. Rides, Drives and Experienced EV Owners and Dealers on hand to answer any EV questions you may have.
THURSDAY 25th April 2019, 1 – 2 PM
CHANGE OF VENUE: NOW AT THE WAREHOUSE CARPARK
The Great EV Road Trip cars will be pulling into Dargaville just after midday, on our tour of New Zealand. You'll notice us arrive when you see our ANZAC Day procession down the main street, as our way of marking this solemn day.
We will then proceed around to The Warehouse and be situated in the carpark where we'll be holding a mini-event.
If you are curious about electric cars or were wondering what the fuss was about, and why people love them so much, then come armed with your questions. We are all experienced EV owners and have the information you need to find out if an EV will fit into your lifestyle, either now or in the next few years.
Come down for a chat, and possibly a test drive or ride in an EV. Experience the difference for yourself.
