Electric vehicles (EVs) aren’t the stuff of science fiction, they are very real and they are here to stay!
If you haven’t seen an electric vehicle for yourself, come along to a Leading The Charge event. At these events, you will be able to talk to some of the owners or read information about the current EV situation in New Zealand and what steps are being taken to increase uptake.
FRIDAY 12th April 2019, 3 – 5 PMThe Road Trip convoy will be stopping briefly in Tekapo as it heads into Christchurch. This epic journey of over 5,285 km is held annually by #LeadingTheCharge volunteers, whose goal is to promote electric vehicles (EVs) in towns across New Zealand.
Find out why we love electric cars. Get in behind the wheel to feel the power and excitement of instant torque, no vibration, zero tailpipe emissions, and low, low running costs.
The EV convoy will be on the old Shell forecourt (now Aotea Gifts) between 3 and 5pm.Rides, Drives and Experienced EV Owners will be on hand to answer any EV questions you may have.
SATURDAY 13TH April 2019, 10:30 AM until MIDDAY
Village Green off Talbot Street
Each year the #LeadingTheCharge campaign sets out on an epic Road Trip of 5,200+ km. The aim is to enable as many New Zealanders to experience first hand, driving an electric vehicle.
These sustainable vehicles are different to drive, and most people agree that they're fun, powerful, and quiet.
Experience it for yourself. Find out why an electric vehicle may be a cheaper option, in the long run, for you.
The convoy will only be stopping for an hour and a half. So make a point of setting aside the time to have a look, and more importantly, to make the most of talking to these owners who have the answers to any concerns you may have, or myths that you may have heard.
SATURDAY 13th April 2019, 3 – 4 PM
The #LeadingTheCharge Great EV Road Trip will be passing through Methven this year for the first time.
Now in the 5th year, the Road Trip can now go anywhere in New Zealand due to improvements in the national charging network, and improved vehicle batteries. EA Networks are installing a brand new public rapid charger in Methven and we want to show the townsfolk why it's an important fixture.
Now that Methven is connected to the national charging network, owning an EV will become a realistic alternative for locals. We will have several EV options for you to view and experienced owners/Better NZ Trust volunteers will be on hand to discuss what living with an electric vehicle is like.
So bring your questions and your curiosity and take advantage of this free event outside the Blue Pub.
SATURDAY 13th April 2019, 7 - 9:30 PMJoin EV City in a very special evening at their showroom.
"Revenge of the Electric Car" is the second film by director Chris Paine, following the initial hit doco "Who Killed The Electric Car." Star of the original film, Chelsea Sexton, will be flying in from the United States to join the #LeadingTheCharge Road Trip and will be on hand after the screening to answer your questions about the film subject and EV in general.
This is a "not to be missed" opportunity to hear Chelsea, who has gone on to become an international spokesperson on EV and was consulting producer for the sequel.
Doors will be opening at 6pm and once the venue is full, no more entry will be allowed. The 90-minute documentary is due to start at 7pm and will be followed by a Q&A session. There is no entry fee.
Synopsis from IMDB:
Revenge of the Electric Car presents the recent resurgence of electric vehicles as seen through the eyes of four pioneers of the EV revolution. Director Chris Paine (Who Killed the Electric Car? 2006) has had unprecedented access to the electric car research and development programs at General Motors, Nissan, and Tesla Motors, while also following a part time electric car converter who refuses to wait for the international car makers to create the electric cars the public demands. As more models of electric cars than ever before start to arrive in showrooms and driveways across the world, Chris Paine's film offers an inspiring, entertaining and definitive account of this revolutionary moment in human transportation. Revenge of the Electric Car follows these auto makers as they race each other to create the first, best, and most publicly accepted electric cars for the new car market. MONDAY 15th April 2019, 9 – 10 AM
Local fleet managers are invited to go along to the Orion offices in Wairakei Road to find out more about introducing electric vehicles into company fleets.
As well as the huge Orion fleet of cars on display, there will be a range of other EV options there, courtesy of the #LeadingTheCharge Great EV Road Trip. They will have been seen around Christchurch over the proceeding weekend at various public events and will be leaving for Blenheim at 10am directly after this event.
If there is interest, the public may linger after the road trip has left to finish discussing options with the knowledgeable staff at Orion.
The experienced drivers from the road trip will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about the realities of owning and driving electric cars and vans. You may be surprised at the range of options that are already available in NZ, and how low the operating costs of these fleets are in comparison to traditional fleets.
Refreshments will be provided.
TUESDAY 16th April, 2019, 10:30 AM until MIDDAY
Join the road trippers in Blenheim as they do one more South Island event before heading off on the ferry for the North Island. This is likely to be a mighty event, with an expected 17 road trip participants in 11 cars.
Some cars will be old favourites and others will be brand new directly off the boat.
Liz Davidson Place is situated right in the centre of town and is named after the town's first female mayor. It is part of a redevelopment and beautifying plan by the Council, who have kindly let us use it.
All are welcome to come and view the cars, meet the Trustees and EV Owners, and/or learn about EV ownership. Perhaps you'll even get a chance to drive or ride in an EV if you haven't before.
