Volkswagen's Electrify America subsidiary has put out a commercial that aims to spread awareness of electric vehicles and how far the industry has progressed, Reuters reports. The ad is part of a $45 million public education initiative. "We're trying to say with this campaign that electric vehicles are fun to drive, the range is great and charging is more widely available than people know," Richard Steinberg, Electrify America's senior director of green cities, marketing and communications, told Reuters.
Volkswagen Looks Back Again While Moving into EV Age
Volkswagen is working on an electric dune buggy concept vehicle that pays homage to the classic Meyers Manx.
Now, as VW prepares to introduce the first EVs on its new MEB (modular electric architecture) platform, the company is quietly developing a concept inspired by Meyers’ creation. If produced, it could be one of three retro-themed EVs, including the Buzz, based on the classic Microbus, and a five-door new Beetle.
Since 1916, cars of all types and more recently motorcycles have been competing in this gruelling uphill race.
With an official time of 7:57.148, VW’s fully electric racer beat the previous EV record of 8:57.118 set in 2016, as well as the overall course record of 8:13.878 set in 2013.*
Overall winners can compete under any class of cars or motorcycles, although the majority come from the open wheel and more recently the unlimited classes.
* Two previous faster times were on a shortened course.
